San Francisco Part 2

After trying to find a view of the Golden Gate, we walked back down the waterfront to try and find the Americas Cup bases. It's a long walk, but great to catch some of the buzz. It was after five by now, so everything was closing - time to eat!

We headed back along the waterfront to Fisherman's Wharf, to Cioppino Restaurant. Ann had their famous fish stew, I had Clam Chowder, which was served inside a round loaf of sourdough. I learned that the trick is to eat the soup slowly enough that it soaks into the bread. Sourdough seems to be a big thing in SF. Ann's fish stew was amaaaazing. Served with rice, it is small pieces different fish, baby squid, calamari, shrimp, crab etc in a tomatoey thick fish stock. It is seasoned with lots of black pepper and sage. The local draught beer is called Steam Anchor - pretty good stuff.

After dinner we found the tram stop that would take us back to the centre of town. There was a massive queue which looked like it was going to take about 45 mins. I was getting grizzly about my tired legs, so on the basis that it's as tiring to walk as it is to stand still, we walked back into the city centre.

What with jet lag, and all the walking, we weren't really looking at the map too closely. Our navigation plan was "we walk up the hill, and on the other side is Union Square. Sadly the hill we were looking at was Nob Hill, one of the nicest, but also one of the steepest places in San Francisco!

Today I have very tired legs.

  1. My Cioppino was served with toasted sourdough (not rice). Although sourdough was invented in San Francisco, it wasn't half as nice as the one you can buy from Wild Wheat on Lake Road! Ann.
